What does it take to port a theme to wordpress?

I asked Rubin Kaplan (aka R.J) who ports Wordpress Themes to port the Sonia theme for my future blog. If you are a business blogger you do not want to use the same theme others are using, an easy way to get one that is unique (and to save money) is to port and existing free theme found on a site like OWD (make sure you credit the designer). Here is my interview I did with R.J Kaplan.

Tell us a little about yourself and how did you get interested in porting themes.

Born in New York, Currently living in Jerusalem, Israel. I work as a web coder for a living. I first got interested in WordPress about a year and a half ago, when looking to redo my personal site. The first thing I looked into was customizing the look, since then I’ve done a couple dozen themes…

What do you think about Wordpress?

WordPress is on of the best CMS’s available, and should be an example for how to make a good customizable and flexible CMS.

What does it take to port a theme to Wordpress v2.0?

A WordPress theme is written in PHP, basically you need to create all the files, such as the header, footer and files for different types of pages, WordPress has allot of functions you can use, and the loop, which loops through the posts, and is used to display the posts for each page. Once you have a working WP theme, creating another is just an issue of copying and pasting the relevant code, then editing and fine-tuning it to match the needs of that specific theme.

You expressed and interested in porting themes for profit, tell us about your future services.

I’ve been doing custom WordPress jobs for clients online for some time now, and I just set up a website offering the service. It can be
