Wordpress Automatic Upgrade Plugin

What a time saver Keith Dsouza’s Wordpress Automatic Upgrade Plugin is! When I used to update my handful of blogs it required several minutes and I would often forget to turn plugins off and screw other things up during the tedious install. This plugin won 3rd prize in a recent Wordpress plugin competiton and I highly suggest those who have little free time and others not technically inclined to use this plugin to keep yourselves current. I just upgraded this blog in a few seconds. Excellent! [More...]

Wigetize Anything Plugin

For those of you who are not able to code your own widget enters the Wigetize Anything Plugin.

From Erik’s Blog:

There are many Wordpress plugins that should be converted into sidebar widgets, made compatible with the Automattic Widget Plugin, but, for whatever reason, have not yet been converted. Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a generic way to call other plugins from within a sidebar widget? Now there is! Introducing…. Widgetize Anything!

Get it here.

Digg Reloaded Plugin

Digg Reloaded adds a nice icon to the bottom of each post for those of you who are interested in marketing your blogs. It is a fact that when you are “Dugg” you obtain links that help raise your worth in search engines. When you are found in search engines you are found by other humans and this allows you to start a conversation with them from your blog.
UPDATE:

Hi there,

I just wanted to let you know that the Digg This Reloaded plugin was actually created by Ankur Kothari (yes, that’s me) and that it’s now been replaced by Gregarious, which has a plethora of features and incorporates other social bookmarking sites as well. It’s located at http://dev.lipidity.com/feature/wp-plugin-gregarious

Thanks for your time,

Ankur

Google Analytics Plugin

Here is a plugin that shows Google analytics and Feedburner traffic data in Wordpress. I am still good with my old bstat plugin but have been interested in better tracking via analytics for one of my blogs.

The Google Analytics and Feedburner plugin offers basic stats and a great looking interface, it also promises future updates with new features. The plugin was written by Joe Tan who also has a couple great Flickr plugins so go checkout his site and get to know Joe!

Similar Post Plugin

A priest of the Roman Catholic Church belonging to the British Province of the Society of Jesus improves his similar post plugin saying:

I’ve been looking for a better alternative to the Related Posts plugin for WordPress. At least better on a blog like mine … and maybe yours too. Related Posts finds matches to other posts using the post’s title or any keywords that you care to define. The titles of my posts unfortunately reflect their context rather than their content and I have too many of them to go back and decide on keywords for them all. So I wrote a new plugin, Similar Posts, using a different algorithm which finds related posts based on the contents of a post and the pattern of word-usage rather than just its title.

And that is just so darn cool that even those close to the almighty code for Wordpress, do you think God himself has a fondness for our little growing community? :)

Anyhow, I am not going to review this similar post plugin but will download and give it a go, you can get it here, let us know what you think. Amen.

Bstat Plugin

Sometimes there is no reason to fix it if it is not broken, the original Bstat plugin by Cassy Bisson is perfect for those of us looking for a light Wordpress stat program. Setup for this stat program goes something like this:

  1. Download and unzip bstat.zip
  2. Place bstat.php in you wp-content/plugins directory
  3. Place spacer.gif in your wp-content directory
  4. Log in to your WordPress admin panel and activate the plugin, then visit the new bstat submenu of the options tab. This will allow bstat to create its database tables.
  5. footer.php of your theme (or in some other place where it will be called once for each page load). This starts the counting; you can see the results in the bstat submenu of the manage tab of the WordPress admin panel.

Cassy has also been working on a Bsuite plugin that is more advanced, for me Bstat does the job flawlessly.

Signature to Feed Plugin

Brendan Borlase, a systems administrator from New Zealand got fired up at sploggers and RSS feed bandits, it prompted him to make a cool signature to feed plugin for Wordpress.

Well, basically after trying several different methods to thwart the splogging community ripping off content and plastering masses of adsense advertising all over it Ive decided on a different tack.

A simple, discrete plugin that injects a small tag-line, © copyright block, or simple link back to the RSS feed origin. Rather than try to stop the splogger crowd I intend to cash in on the potential increase in exposure and then direct folks back here, where its all safe and cosy and virtually advertisement free. -Brendan Borlase

Use this great signature feed plugin to mark what is yours with links, copyright notice or whatever you choose, thanks Brendan!

Wordpress PDA Plugin

Now this Wordpress PDA plugin is just so darn cool, a plugin that allows you to view a Wordpress blog via PDA browser. Imthiaz Rafiq is a programming blogger who discovered the value in Wordpress as a functional CMS and appears to have a need to get stuff running on his PDA. I can not agree more, getting it all working on multiple gadgets is very cool.

Imthiaz says:

It is really simple plugin which detects the browser agent and loads a simple theme on fly. The plugin comes with a theme folder which acts like normal theme with all the functionality of wordpress theme.

I do not have a PDA, can I borrow yours to see if I got the thing working correctly? :)

Hot or Not Plugin

Here is something to keep you blogging, you can now display hot or not images in your wordpress admin panel. It displays a random girl or guy every time you login.

Now that is motivation for you slackers, spammers and dreamers eh?

This creative plug-in was made by Tim Johansson @ Timblog (a coder who also has a couple other plugins including one that displays random bible verse).

Download the Hot or Not Admin Plugin for wordpress.

Note: I currently have not had any luck enabling this plugin in Wordpress 2.0; will keep you posted on its progress. Its most likely a compatibility thing between my other plugins, the question is which one and am I willing to go without it? Maybe Tim can find out what is needed to get this thing working in Wordpress 2.0?

Tim fixed the issue and now “hot or not” is version 1.7, got chicks to admin., geeky sweet!

Wordpress Footnotes

One important aspect of blog usability is intuitive embedded links. Webmasters often link to externals in a way that is not logical to the visitor. Bill Slawski :”(Bill Slawski – The Value of Embedded Links)”: speaks about various navigational strategies saying:

I think that I’ll take one of the suggestions from the Web Style Guide :”(Web Style Guide)”: above, and start putting some related links at the bottoms of posts, when they aren’t quite on point, but something I want to share anyway.

Notice my linknotes reference to footnote [1] and [2] above?

How did I make those numbered links to the footnotes below?

For those of us who use Wordpress an easy way to do this is with a great plugin called Linknotes – by Jeremy Curry.

Subscribe to Comments

Here is yet another valuable blog marketing plugin for Wordpress called Subscribe to Comments 2.0 that keeps your blogs conversation alive.

Why would one want to keep a conversation in a blog alive?

  1. Linkage – If your blog becomes a place for people to hangout and chat they are more likely to link to you, links get you found in search engines and increase your popularity.
  2. Friendship – If you are in a niche and it is about something you truly enjoy keeping the conversation alive builds lasting relationships with people who are like yourself.

Subscribe to comments ads a checkbox as you see near the “submit comment” button underneath the comments area below here. When someone posts a comment they are notified via email that someone has responded. Are you starting to see its value now?

You do not know how many really useful blogs I visit where the conversation just ends because there is no way to remind people that it still exists.

You can download Subscribe to Comments 2.0 here. The plug-in was coded by Mark Jaquith and is an upgrade of Jennifer’s original subscribe to comments plugin.
